Emmy day is one of my all-time favorite days of the year. In my world, it’s like Christmas. Not only do I love to see the nominees strut down the red carpet in their Vera Wang, Christian Siriano, and Tom Ford ensembles, but I also consider television my second language. I know in comedy everything is fair game, but it made me a little uncomfortable that Jimmy Kimmel and those super cute kids from Stranger Things passed out PB&J sandwiches to the audience. My first question — Why aren’t they passing out Eggos? As a peanut allergy sufferer, I would have hated to be in that audience. For me, the smell of peanuts alone instantly makes my insides churn. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed at the bit like most people. But, the fact of the matter is that people who do not suffer from peanut allergies do not understand the severity of people all around you eating PB&J sandwiches. Then, once those people have eaten their sandwiches, they proceed to touch each other and kiss each other on the cheek as they congratulate one another on their achievements. This can be an absolute nightmare and a sure way to end up in the hospital for someone like me.
While I realize this was all just a timely joke, it also speaks to the fact that allergies, especially to peanuts, aren’t taken nearly as seriously as they should be. But this bit did shed continued light on the HUGE EpiPen pricing increase, so I guess for that I should be saying … thank you.
